Remanufacture & return

The fitting you already own, rebuilt to as-new.

Remanufacture is not repair, and it is not refurbishment. It is an industrial process to BS 8887-221:2024 — the British remanufacture standard EGG helped write.

What remanufacture actually is

An industrial process that strips a luminaire back to its components, rebuilds it with current LED technology, and returns it to service with a new UKCA mark and a new five-year warranty.

The result performs better than the fitting did on the day it was first installed. It costs less than buying new. And the embodied carbon in the housing, the gear tray, the metalwork your estate already paid for — stays in service instead of going in a skip.

How remanufacture works

Four stages. One accountable team.

01

Assess

We survey your installation and take sample fittings back to our Glasgow facility. Not everything can — or should — be remanufactured. We tell you which is which, in your own numbers.

02

Specify

New requirements are agreed at this stage: sensors, controls, emergency lighting, light output. Remanufacture is the cheapest moment your estate will ever have to upgrade capability.

03

Rebuild & test

Fittings are disassembled, cleaned and rebuilt with new LEDs and drivers on bespoke gear trays. Every fitting is comprehensively tested, photometry reports are produced, a new UKCA mark is applied and EGG assumes legal responsibility for the complete modified product.

04

Return & install

Our own NICEIC-certified team reinstalls to your schedule — including overnight and phased programmes with zero operational downtime.

Frequently asked questions

What estate owners ask us first.

Is a remanufactured luminaire as good as new?

It has to be. Remanufacture to BS 8887-221:2024 requires the product to meet or exceed its original performance. Because we fit current LED technology during the rebuild, output and efficiency are typically better than the original fitting ever achieved.

What warranty do I get?

A new five-year warranty on the complete fitting — the same as you'd expect buying new.

Who's legally responsible for the modified product?

We are. Every remanufactured fitting is re-tested, re-certified with a new UKCA mark, and supplied with full photometry reports for assessment against building regulations.

Does remanufacture take longer than replacement?

No. The programme timeline closely matches a conventional installation, and we build the schedule around your operations — Edinburgh Leisure's 40 fittings were rebuilt and reinstalled over three nights with no closure.

Can every fitting be remanufactured?

No — and a supplier who says otherwise is selling, not assessing. The audit exists to tell you which fittings to remanufacture, which to replace, and which to retain. Sometimes the right answer is to do less.

How does this differ from refurbishment?

Refurbishment cleans up a product. Remanufacture is a defined industrial process — disassembly, component-level assessment, rebuild, full testing and re-certification — that returns the product to at-least-original specification under a recognised British Standard. It is the only one of the two you can put in a compliance file.
