Forty fittings came off the wall at one leisure centre and went up in another

When the lighting in a public building gets old, replacement is the default — not because anyone decided it was the best answer, but because deciding anything else takes information the estate does not have. You have no record of what is on your walls. You do not know which of it is still serviceable. And you have no way to price keeping it against the cost of replacing it.

In 2022, Edinburgh Leisure asked us to look before they replaced.

What you get

Three answers before any decision is made.

01

A record of every position

Each fitting surveyed individually — type, condition, load, mounting, emergency function — and the record is yours to keep, whether or not you use us again.

02

A judgement on each one

Which fittings are worth keeping and which are not, assessed against a method developed with the University of Strathclyde that weighs technical, economic, environmental and social factors.

03

Both routes, priced

Keeping and replacing costed side by side, in your own fittings and your own numbers, before anything comes off the wall.

The evidence

What the survey found

Edinburgh Leisure approached EGG Lighting for a site survey and quote at Gracemount Leisure Centre, with the aim of reducing annual electricity costs. The survey identified 40 of the existing steel-bodied fittings as candidates for remanufacture rather than disposal.

Candidacy was not assumed. A sample was taken to Glasgow and stripped down before any commitment was given, and assessed against a pre-assessment method developed with the University of Strathclyde. A costed comparison then put remanufacture at 40% below the price of equivalent new fittings, with an equivalent warranty.

What was delivered

Rebuilt in Glasgow. Rehomed across Edinburgh.

The 40 fittings were removed from Gracemount, which was fitted with new luminaires. The originals were rebuilt in Glasgow to an as-new standard with current LED modules, UKCA tested and certified, and installed at Ainslie Park Leisure Centre — a different venue in the same city.

Installation ran over three nights outside operating hours. Neither venue closed and no session was cancelled.

Standardised ZHAGA LED modules and non-destructive fixings were specified, so the fittings can be opened and their components replaced later by any competent contractor. The fittings carry a five-year warranty. The project ran from January to March 2022.

What it was built to

The fittings were remanufactured in accordance with BS 8887-220:2010, The process of remanufacture — the standard in force at the time — and every unit was tested at end of production. A Declaration of Conformity was issued covering electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, radio equipment, ecodesign and RoHS, together with BS EN 60598-1:2015, Luminaires: general requirements and tests.

Embodied carbon

What the carbon numbers actually say

A CIBSE TM65 mid-level embodied carbon calculation was carried out in March 2022, setting the remanufactured fitting against an equivalent new one. It put the remanufactured unit at 60 kg CO₂e against 81 kg for the new equivalent — a saving of just over 20 kg per fitting. Self-assessed by EGG Lighting; not third-party verified.

Most of that difference is one component. The steel body weighs 3.9 kg, which is 61% of the finished fitting, and it was already on the wall. Making a new one would have accounted for 11.5 kg CO₂e on its own.

3 nights

out of hours; neither venue closed

“For the first time we had fittings from one venue stripped back and rebuilt with LED and installed in another. These fittings are also modular so we can just replace parts when needed rather than the whole unit in the future.

The new lighting will last around 10 years and across the three venues, should save us £15k in electricity a year and reduce our annual carbon footprint by over 20 tonnes CO2e, all while vastly improving our customers’ experience.”

Fiona Harvey, then Energy and Sustainability Manager, Edinburgh Leisure, 2022

What happened next

The work continued. The standards moved on.

EGG Lighting has worked with Edinburgh Leisure continuously since, delivering lighting and electrical work at Saughton, Meggetland, Craiglockhart and Jack Kane, with further survey work in 2026.

The standards have moved on as well. EGG Lighting went on to contribute to BS 8887-221:2024, in the same series, and chaired its committee.

On remanufacture today

We assess whether remanufacture is the right answer, and where it is, we can undertake the work. EGG Lighting has remanufactured fittings at scale — 2,116 at a 150,000 sq ft headquarters in Aberdeen. What a specific programme needs is settled job by job: tell us what you have, and we will tell you what we can do with it.

The first step

Tell us what you have, and we’ll tell you what we can do with it.

The first step is a survey, not a quote. We look at what is on your walls, record every position, and give you both routes priced. You keep that record either way.
